When I was in my early 20s a set of movie adaptations from the Danielle Steel novels was released. Danielle Steel has always been popular so it was easy to gather a good portion of her backlist and with a new novel released every few months, I didn’t have to wait long between reads. I would find myself crying at some point in each novel along with being thrilled at every inevitable happy ever after. I instantly fell in love with the drama, the glamour, the romance and the suspense of Danielle Steel’s stories. More often than not, the stories focus on pertinent life issues such as family crises, death, relationships, suicide, divorce, war and illness.I was hooked. Usually, the story involves characters in some sort of crisis which threatens to meddle in their relationship. Her writing expertise spreads to include children’s fiction and poetry. Moreover, many of her books have been translated to more than twenty eight languages circulating in over forty seven countries across the globe. Over 800 million copies of her books have been sold all across the world. The novels by Steel have always been bestsellers, most of them topping honorary lists. In honor of her son’s memory, Steel wrote a book about his life and death. One of her sons, Nicholas, died in 1997 following an overdose of heroin. She divorced her fifth husband of four years in 2002. Steel went through several other divorces afterwards following her subsequent marriages. After nine years of marriage, Lazard and Steel divorced. At twenty, she got her first child, Beatrix.
She completed her first manuscript at the age of nineteen. As a child, she wrote stories and as a teenager she penned poetry. However, this was not really the first time she wrote. She juggled her roles as a wife and student at the university as she began writing. At the age of eighteen, Danielle Steel got married to Claude- Eric Lazard, a French-American banker. This was short-lived though as she left after a short while. In her bid to actualize her dream of working in the fashion circles, she joined a school of design. In 1963, at the age of fifteen, she graduated from this school and was then ready for college. This allowed her to focus on her studies more leading her to excel in school. On most occasions she was alone at home as her father was away on business. She first went to a French school which was a preparatory school in Manhattan. Steel attended her schooling in her hometown. Steel grew up under the catholic faith and even wanted to be a nun someday. At the age of seven though, her parents divorced and she went on to live with her father mostly in New York and Europe.
She spent her early childhood days in France where she lived with both parents. They named her Danielle- Fernande Dominique-Schulein Steel.
